AC Noises Explained: What That Buzzing, Banging or Hissing Means

Outdoor AC condenser unit beside a South Florida home

A healthy air conditioner makes a steady hum and the whoosh of moving air. When it starts making new sounds, it’s usually trying to tell you something. Here’s what the most common AC noises mean — and which ones shouldn’t wait.

Buzzing

A buzz from the outdoor unit often points to an electrical problem: a failing contactor, loose wiring or a weak capacitor. It can also come from a fan motor that’s struggling. Electrical issues tend to get worse, not better, so a buzzing unit is worth a call.

Humming, but the unit won’t start

If the outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin or the system never starts cooling, the start capacitor is a common culprit. It’s usually an affordable fix — but running the system this way strains the compressor, so turn it off until it’s repaired.

Clicking

A single click when the system turns on or off is normal — that’s the relay or contactor. Constant or rapid clicking can mean a failing relay, a thermostat problem or an electrical fault.

Banging, clanking or rattling

These usually mean something is loose or broken: a fan blade, motor mount, blower wheel or even debris inside the outdoor unit. Banging from the compressor itself is more serious. Shut the system off to prevent more damage.

Squealing or screeching

High-pitched squeals often come from worn motor bearings in the blower or outdoor fan motor. Older systems with belts can also squeal when the belt wears. A screech when the system starts can also be a sign of high pressure inside the compressor — a reason to call right away.

Hissing or bubbling

A hiss or bubbling sound near the refrigerant lines or indoor coil can mean a refrigerant leak. Hissing can also come from leaky ductwork. Refrigerant leaks reduce cooling and can freeze the coil, so they need a technician.

Gurgling

Gurgling often comes from the condensate drain when water isn’t draining well. It can also be refrigerant moving through the lines. If you also see water around the air handler, see our guide on why an AC leaks water.

When to turn the system off

  • Loud banging or grinding
  • Screeching at startup
  • A burning smell along with any noise
  • The outdoor unit humming without starting

Running the system through these can turn a small repair into a compressor replacement. Shut it off at the thermostat and schedule a repair.

Prevent noises before they start

Most noisy failures start small: a loose screw, a weakening capacitor, a dry bearing. A maintenance visit tightens, tests and cleans those parts before they fail in the middle of summer.
