Before & After: What a Full AC Replacement Looks Like

Replacing an air conditioner is a big decision, and it helps to know what you’re paying for. Here are before-and-after photos from replacements we’ve done around Broward County, and a step-by-step look at what a proper installation includes.

Before and after

The old system on the left side of each pair was near the end of its life: worn cabinets, aging electrical parts and an indoor unit that had been patched more than once. The new system is a matched indoor and outdoor pair, set level on a new pad, with fresh connections and a clean drain setup.

Why we replace both the indoor and outdoor units

Your condenser and air handler are designed to work as a matched pair. The efficiency rating on a new system only applies when both halves are matched. Most new systems also use newer, lower-GWP refrigerants like R-454B or R-32, so an old indoor coil usually can’t simply be reused with a new outdoor unit. Replacing one half often means poor performance and a shorter life for the new equipment.

What a proper replacement includes

  1. A load calculation. We size the system to your home, not to the label on the old unit. Bigger isn’t better in Florida; an oversized system short-cycles and leaves the house humid. More on that in how to choose the right size AC.
  2. A clear written quote. Equipment options, efficiency levels and what’s included, so there are no surprises.
  3. Permit. AC change-outs in Broward County require a permit and inspection. We handle the paperwork.
  4. Safe removal. The old refrigerant is recovered properly and the old equipment is hauled away.
  5. Installation. New pad or stand, condenser and air handler, line set work as needed, electrical disconnect, condensate drain and a safety float switch to shut the system down if the drain backs up.
  6. Startup and testing. We pull a vacuum, charge the system, and check airflow, temperature split and electrical readings before we call it done.
  7. Inspection and warranty registration. We schedule the inspection and register your equipment so you get the full manufacturer warranty.

What you’ll notice afterward

Most homeowners notice the difference right away. The house cools faster, it feels less sticky, and the system is quieter. Many also see lower electric bills, especially when replacing a system that’s 15 or more years old. For a deeper look at efficiency ratings, see what SEER2 means.
